FAQ SPS/SPS-CB


1. A module can’t plug in deeply on the surack slot

When a module is inserted, be sure that the PCBs enter in the superior and inferior black guides.
Don’t plug-in  the module very strongly! Take the wiring scheme and be sure the module is inserted in the right place. If a module doesn't fit in a position of the rack, the reason is probably that it has different Vin and/or Vout characteristichs respect to this position then with different “polarization keys”, or that the module has been inserted in reverse.


2. The power supply doesn’t turn on

Verify the input power supply is present and above all is correct.
If any automatic switches are present, be sure to set the CLOSE position
Plug out a module: look for the fuse (easily visible in the proximities of the connector) and verify that it’s intact. If it’s opened, see question n.3 below. If instead the fuses are all intact, contact the Advel support.

3. Opened  fuses in one or more modules

Plug out the overall modules from the rack and look for the fuses (easily visible in the proximities of the connector):  if all the modules have open fuses it means that the power supply has very probably been powered with a superior voltage to the nominal contact  the Advel technical  assistance.
If only one module has the fuse opened, there is a remote possibility that the fuse was defective or undersized. So put a new fuse (see DataSheet of the module power supply) and power on the module: if the fuse again becomes opened contact the Advel technical support and not to try to put a new fuse.


4. One module has the LOW MODULE led lighted (red)

If the modules is unbalanced more then 3-4% respect to the modules in parallelo, the relative red led LOW MODULE is lighted.
If the unbalancing overcome the 4-5%, the RMT of the rack goes in alarm. Be sure therefore to operate the “Trimming porcedure” as described in the datasheet of SPS series.


5. One module has the LOW MODULE led lighted (red)

If a module internally exceeds a “critical” temperature, the TEMP LED lights up.
● Check that the fans are working properly;
● check that the working temperature is not too high ot that the ventilation-slots of the racks are free (is ideal to leave about 5cm os free space above and below the rack, as indicated in the datasheet);
● check the calibration of the module (see the “Trimming porcedure” as described in the datasheet of SPS series).


6. RMT in alarm after the load is introduced

if a too elevated load is introduced, the power supply goes in “protection state”, lowering its nominal output voltaget, and accordingly RMT goes in alarm state. So, be sure to use a load suitable to the capacity of the power supply. Verify that the inrush current of the load is not excessive.


7. A module works rightly if alone, but it turn off is used with other modules

t’s a typical problem for too unbalanced modules. Be sure therefore to operate the “Trimming porcedure” as described in the datasheet of SPS series.


8. Giving power to the rack without load and then giving a load, all is ok. But powering on the power supply with the load already connected, the power supply turns on and off repeatedly

It’s a typical problem of undersized power source: be sure to use a suitable power supply (20% more at least than the nominal power of the power supply).


9. RMT does not go in alarm after a module is get out

If the rack is provided of standard RMT the operation is regular, in fact the RMT does not give any alarms in case of extracted module.
If the rack is provided of RMTme the extraction of a module has to give alarm if  the switch related to the exclusion of the “alarm for extracted module” is set to OFF; if it’s set to ON, the RMTme  does not give any alarms in case of extracted module.


10. RMCB gives alarm even if the batteries are connected

Be sure the batteries are indeed connected to the battery charger.
Through a tester, read the voltage to the heads of the battery and be sure the recharge-voltage is opportune: a battery has to be loaded with voltage between +10% and +20% of  the nominal voltage of the battery. A 24V battery, for example, must be loaded by a voltage between 26.4V and 28.8V (Advel recommends 27.6V). If the recharge-voltage is less than 26.4V, the battery can’t be reloaded and the RMCB gives adlarm.
If  the recharge voltage is below 26.4V, set the battery charger to a higher voltage, or connect the battery to the battery charger using greater tickness or shorter cables (to avoid a voltage lost).
It’s not to exclude that the battery is damaged: use a new battery. If the problem also persists with the new battery, contact the Advel support.


11. FCD led is on (red)

Each of the internal fans is supervised by the FCD device (Fan Control Device).
FCD Led is on red the relative fan works at less than 70% of the rated fan speed, try cleaning the fan with compressed air to remove any dust. If the problem persists, the fan must be replaced.

FCD Led is red blinking→ the relative fan works at less than 30% of the rated speed, or is stopped. The fan is to be replaced, unless there is an obstacle that stops the fan.


12. Is it possible to insert a new type module in an old type rack?

It is not possible to insert an SPS-R series module into an SPS series rack, and vice versa. However, on request, Advel can still produce power supplies of updated series.
